🧔🐦 Baltimore Orioles in the Finger Lakes

Habits, Migration & Favorite Foods

If you’ve ever spotted a flash of brilliant orange high in a treetop near Keuka or Seneca Lake, you’ve probably seen a Baltimore Oriole.

They look almost tropical. They sing rich, flute-like songs. And they only stay for part of the year.

In the Finger Lakes, orioles are a true sign that summer has arrived.

Here’s what you should know about them.

šŸŒŽ Orioles Are Migratory Visitors

Unlike cardinals and blue jays, Baltimore Orioles do not stay year-round.

They migrate from:

  • Central America

  • Northern South America

  • Southern U.S.

They typically arrive in the Finger Lakes:

  • Late April to early May

And depart by:

  • Late August or early September

They’re summer residents — here to nest and raise young.

🌳 Where Orioles Like to Live

Orioles prefer:

  • Tall deciduous trees

  • Woodland edges

  • Open groves

  • Lakefront tree lines

They’re commonly found:

  • Along vineyard edges

  • Near large shade trees

  • In mature neighborhoods

They love height and open canopy space.

🪺 The Famous Hanging Nest

Orioles build one of the most recognizable nests in North America.

Their nests:

  • Hang from thin outer branches

  • Are woven like a pouch

  • Made from grasses and fibers

  • Suspended high in trees

They prefer tall trees with flexible outer limbs — often overhanging open areas.

šŸŠ What Orioles Love to Eat

Orioles have a sweet tooth.

While they eat insects during nesting season, they are especially attracted to fruit and nectar.

šŸŠ Oranges

Cut oranges in half and place on feeders. They’re irresistible.

šŸ‡ Grape Jelly

One of the easiest ways to attract orioles.

Offer in small dishes and replace frequently in hot weather.

🌺 Nectar

Similar to hummingbird nectar:

  • 1 part sugar

  • 4 parts water

  • No dye

Use dedicated oriole feeders with larger ports.

šŸ› Insects

During nesting, they rely heavily on:

  • Caterpillars

  • Beetles

  • Soft-bodied insects

Natural landscaping supports this part of their diet.

🌊 Orioles Near the Lakes

Lakefront properties in the Finger Lakes are ideal:

  • Insects gather near water

  • Tall trees line shorelines

  • Open space allows easy flight

Orioles often perch high and sing early in the morning.

You may hear them before you see them.

ā˜€ļø Feeding Tips for Summer Success

If you want to attract orioles:

āœ” Put feeders out by late Aprilāœ” Hang near tall treesāœ” Keep nectar freshāœ” Replace jelly frequentlyāœ” Remove fruit before it molds

Summer heat can spoil sweet foods quickly — especially in humid lake weather.

🐦 Orioles vs. Hummingbirds

Though they share nectar feeders, orioles:

  • Prefer larger ports

  • Need sturdier perches

  • Are much bigger

Using an oriole-specific feeder reduces crowding.

🧔 Why Orioles Feel Special

There’s something about seeing that flash of orange against green leaves.

They don’t stay long.

They don’t visit in winter.

They arrive suddenly — and leave quietly.

Orioles remind us that summer in the Finger Lakes is fleeting.

šŸŒ… Final Thought

Baltimore Orioles are one of the brightest visitors to our region.

If you:

  • Offer oranges or jelly

  • Provide nectar early in the season

  • Maintain tall tree habitat

  • Keep feeders clean

You might just host one for the summer.

And when you hear that rich whistling song echoing across the lake?

You’ll know summer has truly arrived.
