🪟🐦 Are Window Strikes Common in the Finger Lakes?

What Every Upstate NY Bird Lover Should Know

If you’ve ever heard that sudden thudĀ against your window and felt your stomach drop — you’re not alone.

Window strikes are unfortunately common across the United States, and yes, they do happen here in the Finger Lakes.

With our wooded lakefront properties, vineyard landscapes, and backyard feeders, Upstate New York creates the perfect environment for bird-window collisions.

Let’s talk about why — and what you can do about it.

🐦 Why Do Birds Hit Windows?

Birds don’t see glass the way we do.

To them, windows reflect:

  • Trees

  • Sky

  • Clouds

  • Open landscape

It looks like a safe flight path.

In lakefront areas especially, large windows reflect water and shoreline trees, creating a confusing illusion of continued space.

At feeders, birds may also:

  • Take off quickly when startled

  • Flee from hawks

  • Fly directly into nearby glass

It’s not clumsiness. It’s reflection.

🌊 Why the Finger Lakes See Their Share of Strikes

The Finger Lakes region has several factors that increase window strike risk:

🌳 Tree Coverage

Many homes are surrounded by wooded lots, hedgerows, and natural habitat.

🪟 Large Scenic Windows

Lake homes often have big picture windows to enjoy the view — which also increases reflective surface area.

🐦 Active Migration Routes

The Finger Lakes sit along major migratory flyways. During spring and fall migration, bird activity spikes dramatically.

šŸ‡ Vineyards & Open Fields

These attract songbirds and raptors alike — meaning more birds in flight near homes.

So yes — window strikes are relatively common here, especially during migration seasons.

šŸ“… When Are Strikes Most Likely?

Window collisions peak during:

  • Spring migration (April–May)

  • Fall migration (September–October)

Early morning is the most common time.

Birds are active, lighting conditions create strong reflections, and feeding activity is high.

šŸ’” What Happens After a Strike?

Sometimes a bird flies off immediately — but that doesn’t always mean it’s okay.

Other times you may find:

  • A stunned bird sitting still

  • A bird on the ground

  • Feathers left behind

If a bird is stunned:

  • Place it gently in a ventilated box

  • Keep it quiet and dark

  • Release it after 15–30 minutes if alert

If seriously injured, contact a local wildlife rehabilitator.

šŸ›” How to Prevent Window Strikes

The good news? Window strikes are preventable.

āœ” Break Up Reflections

Birds need to see that glass is solid.

Options include:

  • Window decals (placed close together)

  • Feather-friendly dot patterns

  • Soap streaks during migration

  • External screens

  • UV-reflective films

Spacing rule: Marks should be no more than 2 inches apart horizontally or 4 inches vertically.

āœ” Adjust Feeder Placement

  • Place feeders either within 3 feet of the windowĀ (so birds can’t gain speed)OR

  • More than 30 feet away

āœ” Turn Off Night Lights

During migration, birds are drawn to artificial light. Reducing nighttime lighting helps prevent disorientation.

šŸŒ… Why This Matters

Birds are a huge part of life in the Finger Lakes.

Simple prevention steps can dramatically reduce window fatalities and protect the wildlife we love watching.

🌲 A Final Thought

Living in the Finger Lakes means living close to nature.

The same big windows that give us breathtaking lake views can be made safer for the birds who share this landscape.

With small changes, we can keep our yards alive — without accidental harm.
